Renewable Heat Incentive :: RHI Scheme

On 10 March 2011, the Government announced the details of the Renewable Heat Incentive policy to revolutionise the way heat is generated and used. This is the first financial support scheme for renewable heat of its kind in the world. Those who wish to make a claim against the RHI scheme will be allowed to do so utilizing any heat meter which is compliant with the MID Class 2 requirements listed in Annex MI-004 of the EU Measuring Standard Directive (MID) 2004
Meter requirements
As RHI payments will be made on the basis of heat meter readings, the Government will require participants to use meters that have met certain standards to provide assurance that payments are based on accurate measurements and to consumers that their devices are reliable. Tampering with meter components (to influence the meter reading) constitutes fraud and will be dealt with accordingly.
A wide variety of different types of heat meters are available commercially. The Government will allow those who wish to claim the RHI to choose to use any heat meter that meets the Class 2 requirements as above. Requirements for measuring steam are covered separately.

Principal of Operation
During each cycle, an amount of liquid is displaced equal to the difference in the volumes of the chambers minus the volumes of the pistons. This process repeats itself in a continuous flow mode at the rates of 1 to 210 complete cycles per second proportionately to the fluid flow through the meter. In the FMTD4 Microflowmeter, each cycle displaces approximately .02 cc. Approximately 200,000 cycles will displace one gallon. The FMTD20 Microflowmeter has a flow rate capacity five times larger than the FMTD4.
Signal detection is accomplished by light interruptions of a photo emitter/detector device. A ferromagnetic wire tracks the magnet in the nutator [through a pressure tight barrier] causing these interruptions. The interruptions are electronically manifested as sine waves which are then conditioned by conventional electronic means to provide a square wave output.

The forth was the requirement for a batch controlling flow meter which would control the supply of 30k Centistoke viscosity oil, whilst causing minimal system pressure loss.The Macnaught 4” M100 was chosen for job with optional low DP rotors, Air eliminator and Integrated Digital Batch Control display. Accurate Generator Fuel Consumption Measurement
Bell
Flow Systems has just completed the supply and commissioning of fuel consumption equipment on
five 1820kW Generators sets for Thames Water.
The instruments used were special Macnaught M6 pulsed
output meters with a low flow range coupled with Fluidwell F127 flow computers, for very accurate readings.
The Macnaught M6 meters were the choice of meter for Thames Water as accuracy and reliability were very
important for this application as any downtime is costly. Class “A” 3 wire PT100 temperature probes are being
used to measure the fuel temperature on the flow and return lines and these have been incorporated into
specially adapted filters which offer protection for the meters.
The Fluidwell F127 flow computers take the pulses from the flow meters and measure the resistance of the
PT100 probes in order to provide an actual volume. The Active 4-20mA output is then being used by the
Caterpillar control panel to give instantaneous flow readings which can then be analysed in order to start to
make cost savings.

A well known Indian sauce producer contracts Bell Flow Systems to supply and commission three Hot water batching systems.
The LFT model stainless turbine flow meters supplied are being used on each line to measure the hot water through DN40 pipes.
They have specially potted terminal boxes to mainatain a high Ingress protection rating as they are installed within the factories
wash-down areas. The pulsed signals from the flow turbine meters are being read by Fluidwell F130-P batch controllers. These
are coupled with Burkert direct acting solenoid valves which make the complete system capable of delivering very accurate
and repeatable batched amounts, which is key to product quality according to the factory chef's

Coal, Heating Oil & Gas Merchants WG Hill & Son, called upon the services of Bell Flow Systems
when they were looking for a pumping system to deliver Home heating oil within London's busy canal system.
The Fuel barge carries solid fuel and oil supplies along the canal waterway's right into the heart of London.
The rugged Horn W80 Pump was chosen for the application to deliver a steady supply of oil along 30 metres of Vacupress delivery hose,
all neatly managed by an automatic rewind hose reel system.
The accuracy of the system is dictated by the highly repeatable Macnaught
oval gear flowmeter located on the barge
The advantages of transporting Heating oil by canal barge include: avoiding London's notorious traffic jams, as well as the
congestion charge levied on traditional road-going oil tankers. Plus there's a lot less stress for the deliverymen.

Romania's Gas smells great
The first part of a large-scale contract to supply metering products to accurately dose the amount of Odorant into the
natural gas used in the countries gas supply has been completed. The oderant is made from a mixture of mercaptan and sulphide
and required an entirely 316 stainless steel flow metering solution with ATEX approved hazardous area certification.
The Macnaught M4SSG-1 flow meter was chosen for the job because of it's compact nature, ease of installation and high degree
of calibrated traceable accuracy +/- 0.5% o.r and repeatability 0.03%. Wetted materials certs and pressure test certs are available for this range.

A premier UK pump manufacturer has chosen the
GEMINI G100
as the heart of their crucial new pump test rig, used for in-production testing and new model development.
The GEMINI G100 4" Positive Displacement meter was chosen due to it's combination of 1200 L/min flow range, high accuracy and repeatability, as well as low service requirements and ease of installation. The pulse output model was selected so that a remote digital display could be sited in the control room where it was required, 24 metres away.
Options for this model include a variety of body materials output signal types (Reed Switch, Hall Effect, 4-20mA), choice of mechanical connections including screwed and flanged and hygeinic fittings, as well as a choice of digital or mechanical displays with inlet strainer and air eliminator accessories available .

The new F124 model displays the calculated ratio on screen and then monitors the ratio with user defined alarm output capabilities. The unit creates a PI(D) control loop alogorithm by calculating the signal inputs from flow measurement sensors and then generating a propotional analogue control signal used by a pump drive inverter, for example, to precisely control a ratio or mix of fluids.

Deutche Tecalemit TMSII liquid inventory management systems are ASANETWORK compliant and are also capable of multi-drop RS485 connectivity for larger installations as well as remote control via Windows PC using our standard software packages. Printers, Modems and Bar code scanners may all be connected, as may a variety of flowmeter types, level probes and valve actuators.

Lazee Days caravan holiday park has recently fitted all of it's static mobile homes with domestic water and gas meters from Bell Flow Systems to ensure fair billing for all holiday makers staying at the site.
Site Owner Mrs Bunndock claims that the introduction of these meters has been welcomed by most tennants whom are now accountable for their own water and gas usage. It has also improved financial planning and lowered utility bills in the first month by 20%. The environmental benefits of this project are obvious for all to see.

Bell Flow Sytems has recently supplied a major international manufacturer of diesel injection pumps with several
Micro Flow Meters
, capable of measuring down to 1ml /min at 21,000 Psi.
The test bench housing the Micro Flow Meters was developed to test and commission banks of diesel injectors operating at high cycle frequencies and varying rates. The TD4 meter has a range of 1 to 250 ml/min. or 0.02 ml/cycle and is suited to viscosities of 1 to 25 Cps. It is manufactured from 316 Stainless Steel and features a calibrated pulse output signal.
Instantaneous flow rates and totals can be seen by the operator on the F113-P Fluidwell displays supplied, whilst on-screen alarm trigger points, and Data logging outputs, highlight the performance of the products under test. .

The Bell Flow Systems Racing team's, Gunn TS8 stands at third overall in the Duratec Sports 2000 ProSeries Championship (2006), placing a respectable third and two second place positions in the first three races of the season.
Our driver, Tom Mills, recently had the opportunity to put the car through it's paces alongside Tiff Needell, and even piloted yummy mummy Carol Smiley around the track, no doubt grinning all the way. This celebrity racing day will be featured in a leading motor racing magazine shortly.
The Duratec Sports 2000 ProSeries Championship visits the UKs top circuits, including rounds at both Silverstone and Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuits. The next race is this weekend at Snetterton.

Bell Flow Systems employee Laura Buxton is undertaking a 4 day sponsored trek in June 2006 for the childrens charity, Childline. The team will be climbing Mount Toubkal, the Highest peak of North Africa's Atlas mountains.
Approximately 4,000 children in the UK call ChildLine every day. The organisation has expanded very rapidly to try to meet the needs of the children who call, yet they are still only able to answer about 2,300 of these desperate young callers.
